Kobe might have been one of the biggest sweethearts off the court, but Mamba was certainly not the man you want to go against on the court. Many NBA stars absolutely feared going against Kobe. You had to be a different breed to stare Mamba in the eye and take him on. But one veteran NBA star managed to do the former as he knew a well-kept secret of the late Lakers baller.
Kobe was not at all an easy man to budge. Even though he was the sweetest dude you’ll meet off-court, when it comes to basketball, he never stepped back. And maybe this is what shaped his mamba mentality. However, things were a tad bit easier for 37-year-old retired veteran Lou Williams.
Using Liquor To Break Ice
Even though Mamba was an absolute badass on the court. However, Kobe had one secret that Williams decided to exploit to get close to the man himself. In the recent Paul George’s podcast, the two-times Man Of The Year revealed how he got close to Kobe using the latter’s fear of flying, ‘You know we play cards, so we sitting at the table. He sat behind us to the right on the window and you know I don’t like flying… So imma keep me a little tequila in my bag, you know, keep the nerves down a little bit. I’m the guy to come to if you want a little nightcap.’ And Kobe was one of those people who needed that ‘nightcap’.
Kobe Bryant particularly hated traveling. Bryant often preferred tequila in order to calm his nerves. Since Williams was the only person who carried it, Bryant would often turn to him. Lou Williams was particularly happy when he said, ‘I just pour my dog a little something and he go back to read his book or whatever…I supplied Kobe with the tequila.’
It must have felt great to break the ice with a legend using tequila. Even though Mamba was a fearsome man who ate players for breakfast, he certainly was not so when it came to traveling. Keep following our page for more sports-related content and news.
