Ever Since Novak Djokovic stepped onto the court in 2003, the tennising world has witnessed some of the best matches in the history of the game. Currently holding 24 Grand Slam titles, The Serbian tennis legend had one of the best years this season. Currently competing in the ATP Finals, Djokovic managed to achieve a year-end number-one ranking for the 8th time.
But do you know the importance of the achievement? Well, to put it in the simplest of terms, this was the result of years of hard work and dedication. After clinching a victory against the famed Holger Rune, the Serb managed to achieve the unachievable. Also, this will be a landslide moment in Djokovic’s career as he will end the season as #1 after his final-round victory in the ATP Finals. As a result, Djokovic got a little emotional about his newest milestone.
Being The Top Dog
After achieving the unthinkable, Djokovic talked about his first-round win against Rune. In his words, Djokovic said, “It took everything. It was in the first game when he fired shots from the baseline in the first 3 or 4 points.. Moreover, I knew it would be a tough night for me. If I wanted to win this match, I’d have to work really hard.. The significance of tonight’s match.. knowing if I won I’d clinch the #1 ranking. It means a lot. You could see there was a lot of emotions on the court. I could feel it. I was eager to win tonight & get that monkey off my back. So, I won Paris, which put me in a much better position rankings wise. I knew coming into Torino, I’d just have to win 1 match. A big goal is achieved. Everything else now is a bonus.”
This will mark the eighth time Djokovic will finish the year sitting like a king at the very top of the food chain. So, it is obvious why he is going through a range of emotions. Let’s hope Djokovic sustains this streak for years to come.
