Just ahead of the fight, Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo, the latter’s coach, had some last-minute advice.
According to Charlo’s coach, Derrick James, Charlo had a size advantage against Alvarez. Derrick further added that Charlo had to use the size advantage against Alvarez and prove that he could be an imposing presence in the ring and be ‘who you(Charlo) are.’ But we all know how that fight went.
In the prologue released after the fight. Derrick was seen being the typical coach and giving him pieces of advice like “Get off the ropes… What are you waiting for?
When he comes there, boom [hit]. We practiced that’ and even asked Charlo to open up and see where the punches were coming from. But Charlo seemed to be in his own zone and kept ignoring the winning pieces of advice.
Should Have Listened To Coach
Like many of the boxing fans, James Herring, the former junior lightweight champion, went through the clipping. And according to him, Charlo had a great shot to win.
If only he listened to the advice of his coach. In a post in the X, Herring wrote, “Just sat and watched Canelo/Charlo Epilogue from Showtime.
I know Derrick James got a lot of heat after the fight, but from the clips, he was telling Mell the truth in there and what he needed to do.”
Another fan was seen commenting, “James did what he could with what he had. Charlo had the physical advantages, height, arm length, speed but imo lacked the skills needed at that level to put it all together and execute the a game plan that heavily relied on those attributes.”
Once again, this is proof that boxing is a game involving more skills than brute strength or the ability to dish out and take in punches. Keep following our page for more sports-related content.
