It has been eight years since Manny Pacquiao went up against Floyd Mayweather. The result of the fight has given rise to a wave of criticism amongst both fandoms.
While Manny’s camp believes that Manny Pacquiao won the fight on technical grounds, others believe that Mayweather did not fight the ‘Pac Man’ at the right time in his career. But, if you ask Mayweather, he believes that he fought at the right time.
As per a report shared by Forbes, Mayweather and Pacquiao earned somewhere upto $300 million, and the fight generated somewhere close to $600 million. The exact figure is unclear.
However, it is believed the coin purse was split 60/40. While Pacquiao earned somewhere around $120 million, Mayweather received a paycheck of about $180 million.
Keeping these figures in mind, Mayweather gave an interview to FightHype discussing how the timing of the bout was just perfect.
Mayweather’s Interview:
In the interview, Mayweather said, “I’m two years older than Pacquiao. So, when I fight Pacquiao they say ‘You didn’t fight him at the right time’… If $300 million ain’t the right time, then tell me when it is the right time.”
Mayweather agreed that if the fight had happened earlier in their career, then both the boxers would not have made the gigantic amount of money that they made.
Mayweather also discussed the importance of patience in an athlete’s life and how it can make or even break one’s career.
In fact, he was quite straightforward when he said that money was the biggest motivating factor. Therefore, showing that a good athlete also has to be a good entrepreneur to make the correct decisions.
