Yucatan Peninsula is a place of scenic marvels, beautiful turquoise seas, and sandy beaches. But lately, it has also become famous for hosting the WTA finals.
This year, the WTA finals saw some major controversies, but still, it managed to attract a significant crowd of tennis fans flocking to see how the finals pan out. And they were right.
The 22-year-old Polish tennis wiz Iga Swiatek managed to keep the fans entertained and on their toes.
Swiatek managed to defeat an equally phenomenal tennis star, Jessica Pegula, to lift her first title at the season-ending championship. Iga defeated the American tennis star with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-0) on Monday.
The victory not only brought widespread attention to the young star but also restored her position in the World ranking after dethroning the 25-year-old Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus.
Swiatek’s Return
This season of WTA, Iga Swiatek’s landslide return has been one of the biggest talking points. With her amazing performance, Swiatek managed to secure some of the most prominent victories of her career.
In fact, prominent tennis legend Chanda Rubin took note of this young player and commented on it. In a recent podcast, Chanda Rubin commented on the success of the four-time Grand Slam winner.
She said, “To work your way into it, to start playing better tennis, and to go through that event playing better and better each match, through the conditions that the players had to deal with, It was rainy, and it was windy. At times, it seemed impossible to control this little yellow tennis ball. And yet Swiatek kept pushing and playing her game. I think for me, that was the most impressive part of it.”
Rubin further added, “She did get better each and every match. And to have the match like she did against Jessica Pegula, who was also playing incredible tennis, mind you? To have that kind of match with so much on the line, she just continues to be so impressive.”
This shows that Swiatek has managed to secure a spot not only in the Grand Slams but also in the hearts of her predecessors.
