Denny Hamlin has amassed around 48 wins in 17 campaigns. Therefore, with such flourishing stat numbers and also being the longest-tenured racer for Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin has easily established himself as a veteran.
However, no success comes with its fair share of controversy. This stays true for Hamlin as well. One of the recent among them is his difference with the crew chief Chris Gabehart.
Known as one of the most versatile racers to have graced the tracks. Hamlin is known for his “adapt and conquer” ideology.
Still, there were some differences between the racer and the crew, which can certainly prove problematic in the long run. The conflict stemmed during a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Not All Okay In Atlanta…
Due to heavy rain, the race was shortened and was made a 75-lap event. However, fate had other plans when Alex Bowman’s car lost control and hit Hamlin’s car on the left rear end.
But, both the drivers soon took control of their car and continued with the race since NASCAR said that any lap could have been the last due to worsening weather conditions.
Now, the conflict arose from differences of opinion between the racer and the crew head. Gabehart advised Hamlin to take a pitstop and get a tire change.
However, due to the uncertainty of the event, Hamlin and the Joe Gibbs Racing team continued with the race. This created a rift between the two. In a recent podcast, Hamlin revealed the nature of the strained relationship.
Hamlin agreed that he was really on the edge and added, “I was losing my mind in there. I was really loose at one time.”
Still, by reading into the tone of Hamlin in the recent interview, it seems that the relationship is in a cordial state. As Hamlin said, even when he was losing his mind on the track, Chris kept his cool and performed his duties with professionalism.
