Since the early 2000s, San Antonio Spurs have had successful winning seasons. The golden ear of Tim Duncan was the time when the team had no records of losing for the past 22 seasons. However, all of this came to a screeching halt when the team failed to qualify for the 2020 postseason.
Now this long run could be credited to its players. However, sources claim that the team’s coach Gregg Popovich is the real reason behind the team’s longevity. In a recent podcast, King James’ buddy talked about Coach of Pop’s impact on Victor Wembayana.
Allie Clifton and Richard Jefferson went in to discuss the impact Coach Pop would have on the newly acquired talent Victor Wembayama. Both of them drew parallel with Mike Tyson’s coach and discussed how things would turn out.
Jefferson said, “like he was one of the greatest trainers of all time. He found Mike Tyson at 19 and was like you’re going to be my greatest achievement and just got Mike. And one of the reasons why Mike started to struggle is because Vic(Cus) passed away. He was very very old. But my point is, these once-in-a-generation, these once-in-a-lifetime guys can give you purpose.”
Jefferson further added, “They can give you a reason, they can give you that energy to be like, ‘Hey look, I might not be with him for his whole career, but if my last f***ing stretch is to give this kid the base that’s gonna allow him to be great, then oh, that’s purpose every day.’”
Therefore, Greg Popovich is an integral part of the Spurs organization. Without Coach Pop, there is no San Antonio Spurs. This was the impact Coach Pop had on the individuals he mentored. In fact, after acquiring Wembayana, the Spurs have made sure to extend Coach Popovich’s contract Since the officials feel that Wmbayana needs Coach Pop’s insight.
