In sports, you win some, and you lose some. It’s just how it works. But fans of the United States Women’s National Team or USWNT seem to disagree with that notion. Things have been rough for the team and the fandom for a few days now. Expected to win against Sweden in the R016, fans were elated. But, when that did not happen, the team faced a lot of flak, mostly from the fandom itself.
Amidst the outrage, Megan Rapinoe penned an emotional message dedicated to the team and her retirement from the game. This, however, triggered some fans, which initiated another row of criticism. Amongst the critics was the ex-president of the US, Donald Trump. Trump is not known for subtlety, and his criticism of Rapinoe and the team is an example of just that.
Rapinoe took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt message addressing her fans. She wrote, “This game is so beautiful, even in its cruelest moments… his team is in special hands as I walk away, just like it always was, and always will be. Because that is what this team is all about. We lay it all out on the line every single time.”
But after the ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ exit of USWNT, Donald Trump went on a Twitter rampage. In a fit of disappointment and anger, Trump started criticizing several athletes, including Rapinoe and Joe Biden as well. This is nothing new for the ex-president, as he is known to air out his dirty laundry quite often in public.
This rampage was also fueled by the old feud between the duo, which started during the famous MAGA campaign by Trump. Therefore, when Megan Rapinoe missed a crucial penalty during the match with Sweden, Trump did not pull his punch. He immediately took to the internet and took a jibe at the athlete, saying, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA”. What do you think about this new round of criticism?
