El Clasico
El Clasico or el clasico, the name given after the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The name was given originally when these two teams used to meet in the Spanish Championship. But now, every match between them is called an El Clasico. This is one of the biggest rivalries in football history.
History
The Author of The Story of Spanish Football said, “they hate each other with an intensity that can truly shock the outsider.” These two teams are the biggest clubs in Spanish football history. And there are so many clashes, rivalries, trophies, matches, and so on.
In 1930, Barcelona had a reputed club and a symbol of Catalan identity. They have a reputation as “the rebellious club” and oppose the conservatism of Real Madrid. The rivalry started in the 1943 Copa del Generalisimo semi-finals. Real Madrid won the second leg with an 11-1 victory, and the reign of Santiago Bernabeu has begun.
The Revolution: Di Stefano
In 1950, Alfredo Di Stefano, a legendary Argentine striker, was showing great potential. And both Barcelona and Real Madrid were interested in signing him. But there was a contract stating that he would stay at Real for three seasons and then would move to Barcelona for three seasons.
But real Madrid bought the half share from Barcelona and signed Di Stefano with 40% of their annual revenue. They paid 5.5 million Spanish pesetas, 1.3 million bonus and a salary of 16000.
And with Di Stefano’s transfer, the revolution started. After that, Real Madrid won five editions of the European Cup. Real Madrid and Barcelona met twice in the European competition, and Madrid won in both fixtures. In 1959-60 they had their fifth consecutive title.
Player Rivalries: Di Stefano and Kubala
Before Messi and Ronaldo, there were Kubala and Di Stefano. Before 1950, Real Madrid was an ordinary team. But after arriving of Di Stefano, Paco Gendo, Raymond Kopa, and Ferenc Puskas, they were a title contender not only in Spain but also in Europe.
Barcelona was behind them with their Hungarian hero Laszlo Kubala and other famous players like Sandor Kocsis, Evaristo, and Zoltan Czibor. The players were involved in the turning points of their teams.
At that time, these two teams were heavy giants in European football. They almost met in all competitions. In their time, they met 26 times in competitive matches. Real Madrid won 13 matches, FC Barcelona won 10 matches, and the rest three were concluded with a draw. Kubala only scored 4 goals in their meet, and Di Stefano scored 14 goals.
Player Rivalries: Ronaldo and Messi
After the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, the rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi began in 2009. During that time, both players had broken so many records and contributed so much to their respective teams that no players before them were able to do that.
They both scored a total of 922 goals between 2009 to 2018 for their respective clubs. They both were alternatively top scorers in La Liga and in the Champions League for most of the time.
Starting with Messi has a record of scoring 26 goals in El Clasico and won the European Golden Shoe five times. During that time, Messi won the Ballon d’Or four times. And he is the all-time top scorer of La Liga, with 474 goals.
On the other hand, Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League and also for Real Madrid. He scored a total of 450 goals for Real Madrid. In addition, he won the Ballon d’Or four times and the European Golden Shoe three times during that time.
Both players had so many achievements during that period that it will take a long time to tell about them. In El Clasico, Ronaldo has a better minutes per goal ratio with 141 minutes, and Messi is behind with 151.54 minutes. The rivalry was more exciting after Barcelona signed Suarez, Neymar, and Real Madrid signed Gareth Bale.
