Admitting one’s mistake is not a job for weaklings. It takes strength of character and clarity to accept your follies and work on them, and Lewis Hamilton’s latest gesture proved just that.
Formula 1 has always been a cutthroat sport where rivalries can grow a little too serious. But that does not mean the baggage of these tiffs need to be carried throughout their lives or career.
Apart from being a fiercely competitive sport, this is a sport that also demands a certain kind of dedication and precision. Every driver has a single goal, beat the finish line and do it first.
Now what happens when you put highly competitive men in an equally competitive format of sport with no room for error? You get rivalries, and these rivalries can last a while.
However, the Italian GP was one of those rare occasions where drivers took accountability and even went to apologize. Throughout the GP event, we saw our beloved Hamilton struggling to hold the lead.
He tried closing in the gap but was mostly lagging behind two McLarens driven by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The Margin Of Error
Mercedes, headed by Hamilton, has mostly had a steady race pace when compared to McLaren.
Still, we saw Hamilton struggling to get past Piastri. And when he finally got the chance, he made a mistake that could have cost him and his fellow driver’s life. During the laps 41 to 51, Hamilton was fighting tooth and nail to get past Piastri.
In fact, at one point, both the drivers were side by side, and it seemed that Hamilton had the opening he was desperately looking for.
But fate had different plans, at Turn 4, Hamilton unintentionally turned into Piastri and hit the Australian’s front wing.
The crash was not fatal and left Hamilton unscathed, but Piastri had to take an extra pit stop in order to replace the front wing. Subsequently, Hamilton faced a five-second penalty but still managed to move up paces.
Once the race was over, Hamilton released an official statement to the press. In the statement, he said, “It was totally my fault, and I went and apologized to him.” This showed Hamilton in a more mature light. But some fans call this apology a bandaid solution and call for sterner action.
