Sources suggest that the Indian hockey team has only scored a goal twice in the last six games. Moreover, the team’s average performance in the last few events in Britain, the Netherlands, and Spain have worried the coach.
While talking to correspondents from ESPN, Fulton agreed that goals play a major role in boosting team morale. As a result, now when the goals dried up, things seemed concerning.
The Indian Hockey coach said, “Scoring goals is what every team wants to do, sometimes you do, sometimes you can’t. But it’s not for the lack of trying. Tonight, we did well, and we converted our chances.”
More On India Hockey Team:
Earlier this year, captain Harmanpreet Singh was seen struggling with penalty corners at the World Cup. Therefore, the Indian team went ahead and worked on their drag flicking. This proved in the last match of the Asia Cup.
The team impressed Craig Fulton since the team was not solely depending on Singh for winning penalty corners. In fact, Fulton was really happy to see “Varun [Kumar] get in on the act.”
Both Harmanpreet and Varun scored two goals each from the penalty corner, while Mandeep secured his 100th international goal. As a result, India won the match and did so with style.
However, does it mean that officials have addressed defensive issues plaguing the teams? Sadly, the answer is no.
Craig Fulton is happy that his boys put up a stellar performance. Yet, he believes that the team needs to stop running toward the goal every time it gets possession.
In fact, the Indian coach was talking about the need for the Indian team to understand the importance of defensive play and thinks that the team needs to cultivate this side.
