Badminton is a sport similar to tennis. However, instead of a ball, you have a cone-shaped feather ball. This is because badminton was a sport solely designed to play indoors.
Badminton is a game that has been around since the 16th century. However, some might even believe that the concept of badminton is 2000 years old. The sport became popular when it was added to the Olympics.
If you really want to move forward with badminton, you first need to know all the badminton rules and regulations.
Badminton Rules & Regulations
- Singles Or Doubles: Badminton can be played as singles and doubles. In a single rally, two players will play against each other. While in the double rally, each side pairs with a different player to play against the other side.
- Choosing The Sides Of The Court: You can’t just decide to choose to stand left or right. The sides are decided based on the scoreboard. If the opponent’s score is even, you stand on the right side of the court. If the server score is odd, you stand on the left side of the court.
- Know Your Equipment: Badminton is played with a stringed racket and shuttlecock. The cock is topped with features, and the base is made up of rubber. The players are only allowed to hit the rubber base and not the feather.
- The Serve: The serve is the basis of badminton. It is the first hit a player makes before the start of any rally. A serve must be made under the arm and below the server’s waist. According to serving rules in badminton, an overarm is illegal in the game, and the player serving an overarm will be penalized.
- The Net: The net is the divider that divides the court into two. It is also at a height of 1.55 meters, which marks the minimum height of every shot.
- What’s A Foul Play: Unlike tennis, where you can hit the ball after hitting the ground once, you can’t do that in badminton. According to the badminton rules, your cock can’t touch the ground or hit the cock twice.

How To Play Badminton?
Scoring System
- Every game has 21 points per set.
- Whoever makes the first 21 points wins the set.
- The best of three 21-points wins the game.
- If the score is tied to 20, one has to get 2 consecutive points to win the game.
- However, when the score reaches 29, whoever scores the 30th point wins the game.
- Finally, whoever wins the set takes the serving role.
Interval Or Change Of End
- Players are allowed to take a 60 second break.
- A 2-min break is allocated in between the game.
- Players change the side of the court when the leading scorer hits 11 points in the third set.
Badminton Rules For Singles
In singles matches, the server serves the shuttlecock. From this, the side of the service is decided by the scoreboard. If the point is odd, it’s left. And if the points are even, the player will serve from the right side of the court.
After serving, if the server prevails, they will continue the service from the secondary service court.
The winner of the rally earns the points and takes the serve.

Badminton Rules For Doubles
- A side will only have one set.
- The server was sent to the other side in a straight line.
- The server starts from the right service court; when the score is tied, they serve from the left court.
- The service side earns a point if they prevail in the game. When that happens, the same server will serve the shuttlecock from the other side of the court.
- If the receiving side wins the rally, they earn the points, and the serving side changes to the receiving side.
When Is It Considered A Fault
- The serve is considered a foul if the service is above the waist or the head of the racket is higher than the handle.
- If the shuttle doesn’t land in the correct service court.
- The server steps forwards as they serve.
- Any player feinting his opponent before or during the serve.
- Any serve or return shot that lands outside the boundary of the court, passes under the court, or hits the player’s body is considered foul.
- It is foul if the player hits the cock even before crossing the net.
- Hitting the shuttle twice in succession.
