After England’s Jonny Bairstow chose to withdraw from the UAE leg of this lucrative IPL squad because of personal reasons; Rutherford was roped in Guyana as a substitute by the Hyderabad-based franchise. He was once part of the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. In the recent Caribbean Premier League, the 23-year-old left-hand hitter displayed a definite form.
The left-handed Guyanese batsman played seven matches in 2019, all for Mumbai, with a 73-run strike rate of 135.18 and one wicket. Rutherford was not a member of the Hyderabad Sunrisers’ XI players that had a defeat of 8 wickets on Wednesday against DC.
Before Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer struck down with crucial knocks, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, and Axar Patel limited Hyderabad to a modest total of 134. That target was manageable by SRH, but the recent addition of runs helped Delhi to climb to the top of the pointer table, and left SRH at the bottom.
Closing Thoughts
We also have our heartfelt sympathies for Rutherford at this challenging time of his life. Although we have not caught the player commenting on this unfortunate incident yet, we are sure that he will have a lot to say when he returns to play the IPL next year. We wish him all the best for his career ahead.
