An MRI on the right knee of C.J. Gardner Johnson, who plays defensive back for the Detroit Lions, showed zero structural damage. Moreover, as per a source on ESPN yesterday, he is under regular consideration.
On Monday, Johnson was carted off after he was suddenly hurt during a basic team drill in which there only appeared to be subtle contact. Additionally, he wouldn’t have been able to put pressure on his right leg and the trainers stepped in to help him to his feet.
Moreover, the player’s teammates were shaking visibly in the aftermath of this injury. Cameron Sutton, who plays cornerback for the team, spoke to ESPN after practice.
“It’s hard to see your brothers go down. You never want to see it, especially early in camp or really any day, regardless of the position or the player. It’s kind of hard to detail. All you can do is send up prayers.”
Also, several teammates, including Jared Goff, who plays quarterback, went to check on the injured player. Johnson was pretty emotional after the practice as he lay on the field, pointing to the upper portion of his right leg to the trainers.
Additionally, other members of his team sent encouragement and best wishes as they patiently waited to hear the official status of Johnson’s injury.
In this context, cornerback Jerry Jacobs mentioned,
“When I went over there, I think he said somebody stepped on it, but I didn’t see it. I just saw him go down, and I saw him grabbing it. I went through that, too, when I grabbed mine. Not saying that I know what it is, but I’m just praying that it’s not anything like [an ACL]. To see a guy like that with great energy and a great attitude change the room. S— is so sad. I’m going to go in and check on him. But it’s sad because he’s a great guy.”
Linebacker James Houston spoke to ESPN as well and mentioned,
“You hate when people go down, especially without pads on — it’s camp. We haven’t even played a game. So, first, I’m praying for him, and I think the whole team is praying for him, and we just hope he’s going to be OK. You can’t let things like that affect you. The show must go on. Somebody else has to go in and fill in, and we’ve got to be able to keep the beat going. Obviously, yeah, it sucks because that’s your homeboy, that’s your teammate. I’ve known him for a very long time, so I definitely will be praying for him.”
The Detroit Lions brought Johnson in for a solid upgrade to the secondary as their best free agent. In March, Johnson agreed to a kickass one-year deal worth 8 million dollars.
