In a weird turn of events, Claressa Shields recently called out Kieth Thurman, the former welterweight champion. This calling out happened amidst the Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford bout.
Thurman responded to this callout, saying that he did not want to “punch a girl in the face.”
So, he would let Shields wear headgear and would only use jab if the bout happens. Shields was having none of it and replied back, saying that Thurman should wear a ‘big cup’ and took a dig at the Thurman vs Collazo fight.
Keith Thurman Versus Claressa Shields:
The 28-year-old Shields made another bold comment saying that he would definitely outbox the male boxer.
However, not everyone shares the same opinion as her, and several sports critics said that it would be suicide. Still, Shields believes that she can come out of the fight standing straight and on top.
When Shields was asked about the number of rounds she could go through, Shields answered, “ We go 10 rounds. I’m winning 7 of them. Easy!!!” Therefore, this speaks volumes about Shield’s’ confidence that she can win.
But would it be as easy as Shields thinks it to be? For context, apart from Manny Pacquiao, Thurman did not lose to anybody he faced in a professional boxing match.
Therefore, with such a stellar record, things could be challenging for Shields. When asked about the bout, Thruman said, “You know, I wouldn’t wear bigger gloves; I would wear smaller gloves, and I would let her wear headgear too. I don’t wanna punch a girl in the face.”
Meanwhile, Shields has a record of 14-0-0 [win-loss-draw]. So, Shields is not a wet, behind-the-ear fighter who is looking for about to get clout. She is an established fighter who has accomplished enough in her own domain. So it would be interesting to see these two boxers fight in about.
