When the internet asks about the Global Hunger Index, it asks, “Is the wwe fake?” “is wwe real or fake?” “why is wwe fake?” “how is wwe fake,” etc.
However, do not sweat, as we are here to help! Welcome, sit down, and let us take you down a rabbit hole to seek one true answer to the monumental question on the internet, “is wwe wrestling fake”?
However, before we can move forward, we need to go back. All the way back to the inception of WWE. Started in 1953 as CWC (Capitol Wrestling Corporations), it was the very first of its kind.
There is different speculation on the internet regarding the ‘real founder’ of the organization, but it is apparent that the McMahon family played a role.
Currently, WWE airs in 150 different countries with shows like RAW, Smackdown, and WrestleMania. Did you know that WWE’s net worth is around $5.09 billion as of March 2024?
Moreover, WWE has played its part in launching some of the biggest names in Hollywood. like Dwyane ‘The Rock’ Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista are some of the few from that list.
Now, is WWE fake? The answer to this question is probably not a mystery. However, nobody said that we could not cement the stance further. so let us dive right in.
Is WWE Fake?
The answer is quite apparent. However, there are other aspects that we have to look at before we make any sort of decision. Therefore, it is very important that we rephrase our question. Is WWE a sport? The answer is no; it is not a sport.
Even Vince McMahon, the alleged founder of the organization, when asked this question, said, “I really don’t respond to that question. I think it was done to death in the ’20s. But I hasten to say that we’re in the sports entertainment field. It’s not important to determine what wrestling is or not. It doesn’t fall into one particular category. It’s not in the category of sport, in the strictest sense of the word.”
McMahon first dropped the term ‘sports entertainment’ to describe his business venture. According to him, his wrestlers were performers who performed risky feats of human strength.
Later on, when Linda McMahon was asked the same, she responded, “Unlike professional boxers, professional wrestlers are not competing in contests where points are scored, and the winner determined, by potentially injurious blows struck at an opponent. Instead, like the skilled athletes you see in the circus or the Harlem Globetrotters, our athletes are well-conditioned professionals who are the best at what they do. And what they do is entertain people.”
Therefore, when answering the question, “is wwe fake?” The correct term to use would be ‘choreography’ instead of ‘fake’ as the former encapsulates the risk factor. Meanwhile, the former term negates the risk factor.
List Of ‘Real’ Injuries:
Even though these fights are termed as ‘fake,’ they do tend to have their fair share of very ‘real’ injuries. Let us look at some of these:
2010, Orbital Bone Fracture:
On May 25, 2010, a match between Undertaker and Mysterio left Undertaker with a broken nose, broken orbital bone, and a concussion. Due to this injury, Undertaker had to be pulled out of a Fatal 4-Way match.
In 2007, Pectoral Muscle
An awkward hip toss against a match with Mr. Kennedy led John Cena to tear his right pectoral muscle. Due to this, Cena lost his title and had to take a year off to recover.
2002, Neck:
As for the list of injuries, this has to be one of the most extreme ones. In a match with Brock Lesnar, Hardcore Holly suffered a broken disk in his neck. Reports claim that this was due to real-time tension between the athletes.
1999, Death:
One of the saddest of the lot. “Owen Hart was supposed to glide in for a dramatic entrance from the rafters while dressed as The Blue Blazer and battle The Godfather.” However, the apparatus failed, and he suffered a devastating fall that resulted in his death. Owen Hart was just 34 at the time.
Now, WWE might not be a sport in the strictest of terms. However, it certainly is far from fake. The injuries that might happen can sometimes be fatal or career-breaking at times. Therefore, the question should not be, ‘is WWE fake or real?’; rather, one must ask, ‘how much is real and how much is not?’
Why Do People Still Watch It?
Why do you flock to theatres when a new Marvel movie drops? The answer is kind of similar. WWE does not present us with a sporting event. It instead presents its audience with a nice story in the disguise of a somewhat ‘real event.’
It is this masking that lends WWE the charm. In other words, the fans know that it is choreography, but still, they would root for their favorite athlete, similar to a Harry Potter fanatic who cheered at the defeat of the Dark Lord.
The only difference is, unlike movies, you never know whether the guy you are rooting for is going to win or not. Therefore, it is this thrill or suspense that keeps the audience hooked on the show.
Final Thoughts:
How can we not mention Santino Marella’s cobra charming gimmick back in 2013 while talking about how fake WWE is?
I know we have been discussing how WWE should not be discredited and that performers should be given their due credit for performing injurious stunts. Still, it’s these moments when you feel like throwing a chair at your Television.
Still, we have to agree that the question, ‘Is WWE fake?’ is still a tricky one to answer.
