Arun Dhumal, in a press release, confirmed that the Indian Cricket Team led by Rohit Sharma would not be traveling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Instead, the boys in blue would be going to Sri Lanka for the match.
Dhumal is currently the chairman of the Indian Premier League, and even in 2022, he was the one holding the same chair. Currently, Dhuman and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah are in Durban for the ICC Chief Executives Meet.
Is Political Tension Bleeding Into Sports?
Dhumal has said to meet up with PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf to finalize the Asia Cup schedule. As Dhumal gave a report to PTI, “Our secretary met PCB head Zaka Ashraf and the Asia Cup schedule was finalized, and it is on course as it was discussed earlier.”
Therefore, there have been discussions about these things for a while. However, the cause for changing the schedule so late is still very unclear. Could this be the worsening political tension between the country, or something larger is at play here?
Indian cricket authorities claim that this decision was for security reasons and not political in any shape or form.
Still, BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s pushing for the game to be held in a more ‘neutral’ environment makes the underlying tension between the two nations more apparent.
After Jay Shah’s explosive commentary back in October, then PCB chairman Ramiz Raja also made some comments. According to Ramiz Raja, the Pakistan team would cordially withdraw from the competition if Jay Shah’s decision goes forward.
Hence, both nations seem to have reached an impasse. As of now, there has been no news about the exact locations of the match.
