Iga Swiatek is currently dominating the WTA tour. The world #1 is in her seventieth week of holding the current ranking. Not an easy feat when you consider the fresh pool of talent that comes in with every season.
After acquiring winning the Warsaw Open, Iga proved her dominance in front of her home crowd as well. However, not everything was hunky-dory for the 22-year-old tennis player.
A former tennis player turned commentator, Jimmy Arias, had problems with Iga’s on-court attire. As a result, Jimmy went ahead and lambasted the current number 1 for her attire, and in the process, became the public enemy no.1.
Right after Iga Siatek beat her opponent, Jimmy made a comment saying, “I don’t think she’s been great for women’s tennis bc she wears her hat so low that you can’t even see her face or eyes during the match, so you don’t get a connection as much as you could… I want to see her personality.”
This did not sit well with the fans and created a major outrage in the tennis community.
Tennis fans are one of the most loyal fandoms of sport. With such a loyal fanbase, it is obvious Arias would not be spared for her comment on Iga’s choice of fashion during her game.
Several fans jumped right in and defended the player by tweeting, “Who’s Jimmy Arias and what’s his problem? You’d never hear someone say that about an ATP player let’s be honest”, and “She leads by example in so many ways. How often do you see her lose her rag, smash her racquet or show disrespect to her opponent? She’s all class and a great player. That’s her personality and that is fine by me”, etc.
It is sad that even in 2023, players have to be subjected to such demeaning comments about their clothes and credibility.
