As you might already know, MLB opened its doors to the idea of free agents back in the ‘70s.
Around five decades later, the league is trying to add some more layers of complexity to the free agent system. And Scott Boras, as an MLB super agent, is spilling some tea about the workings of baseball’s free agent world.
Sunlight After A Stormy Night
Boras is one of the biggest names in the world of baseball trade. Boras was the man behind the 330 million dollar deal between Bryce Harper and the Phillies. This deal is seen as one of the biggest deals of this season, and when asked about it, Boras revealed that it was not easy.
The ace super agent revealed in a podcast about the challenges he faced while making the Bryce and Phillies deal.
In his own words, Boras said, “I had four teams telling me that Bryce Harper is somebody they only wanted to invest in for 3 or 4 years and he was 26 years old.” No team was willing to invest in Bryce for a long period of time. Since he was 26, nobody was investing in Bryce.
When Boras asked the team officials to back up their decisions with proper stats, they seemed to not come forward with an answer.
But in the end, Boras did manage to strike a deal with the Reds for a long-term period. Since then, the Reds seemed to be doing great with a new change of pace and roster.
This shows that even an MVP title holder like Bryce Harper can also made to feel unwanted and rejected in the current MLB free-agent world.
