According to all new NBA guidelines, teams are allowed to use ‘soft’ caps. This means that under special conditions, teams can exceed their existing cap. This would give the officials a breathing space that was not present earlier on.
However, it might not be a good move for players. There can be an actual disconnect between players and executives. Front office executives can sometimes not comply with the player’s demands.
Due to these newer guidelines, many players are left dissatisfied. One such athlete is James Harden.
Just a few days back, in a promotional event in China, the Philadelphia 76ers’ James Harden called Daryl Morey, the president of the team, a ‘liar.’ This ignited a row of discussions that shook the NBA world to the core.
Following this statement, the NBA world was absolutely divided. Some were siding with Harden, while some were siding with Morey. One such person was Mark Cuban. Cuban publicly sympathized with Daryl Morey and shared his experience of signing Kyle Irving.
A Divided Conversation
According to sources, Harden’s comment was the result of a misunderstanding that stemmed from these newer guidelines.
ESPN reported that this was due to the team’s refusal to let go of Harden, as the latter wanted. In fact, fans and sources also believe that the 76ers are asking for a much higher price. As a result, the deal is not going through.
In a recent podcast hosted by Rone, Mark Cuban shared his side of the argument. Cuban provided a deep insight into the act of signing players above the decided cap.
In the conversation, Cuban revealed that one of the biggest drawbacks is that it affects team building.
Here’s What Cuban Said…
Cuban went candid and revealed that “It’s not even so much can they demand, it’s where can they go you know because if the with the new CBA it’s not a hard cap, you can go above it, but there’s a lot of penalties that come with going above that… When you look at last year, we had issues that had nothing to do with Kyrie or Luca playing together. They were a 60 percent net effective field goal rate plus four point whatever you know, top-five combo in the league when they play together. Just between injuries and everything, we just didn’t have a team that was committed to the roles.”
