Sunday’s Cup Series Finale at Daytona circuit ended on an emotional note. NASCAR veteran and former Cup champion Kurt Busch announced his retirement from the sport.
This was indeed an emotional moment for the community, and fans flocked to the event in order to pay their respects to the Haal of Fame-worthy racer. But this was not surprising news, as fans had been anticipating his exit for a while now.
Sources suggest that Kurt’s retirement came in the wake of last year’s crash at the Pocono Raceway.
Since then, Tyler Reddick has come and took over Kurt’s role. Although Tyler did a great job of talking over the torch from Kurt, the latter’s void will still be unfillable.
Several fans, as well as industry insiders, took to social media to express their sadness about Kurt’s retirement.
One such person was former driver and close friend Jeff Burton, who expressed his utmost sadness on Kurt’s retirement post the unfortunate crash at the Pocono Circuit.
The Emotional Goodbye
Due to the crash at Pocono, Kurt was left seriously injured. This injury took its toll on the racer’s health and ability to race.
As a result, the 2004 champion had to sit out most of the 2022 season. Therefore, at Kurt’s request, the 23XI Racing camp made Reddick’s services available.
Trusting Kurt’s judgment, co-owner and long-time friend Denny Hamlin went with the former’s decision as he went through the recovery process in an attempt to return to the track. But the way things have unfurled, we might never see the legend race again.
After learning about the crash and Kurt’s retirement, Burton took to social media to express his sentiment.
In a post dedicated to Busch, Burton wrote, “Congratulations @KurtBusch on a great career! Not only an incredible driver, but also a friend. Thank you for all you’ve done in and out of the car for NASCAR. I cannot wait to see what you do next!”
This was indeed a sad week for NASCAR as a community as they bid farewell to a great talent.
