UFC fighters may pose as the absolute beasts of mayhem and murder, but they are humans at the end of the day. Stepping into the ring to face a new opponent brings out this human side of the fighters.
According to Alex Pereira, a fighter fights the fight on two different fronts. First, in the octagon facing the opponent. Second, in their mind, with their fears and doubts of failure. This is enough to make the biggest and meanest fighters feel fear and anxiety.
Alex has said that this is something every fighter is going through while facing a new opponent every time, regardless of experience. As a result, a fighter is bound to feel a surge of emotions in these moments of quietness before the fight begins.
Pereira is one of the most feared fighters in the UFC. Pereira’s current UFC statistics stand at 8-2-0 (win-loss-draw).
He is known for having a penchant for knocking out his opponent. Still, in a candid interview, he was seen talking about his pre-fight jitters against Sean Strickland at the UFC 276.
This conversation derailed fans’ perception of fighters and their mental state, yet it initiated a very important conversation in the fighting community.
Alex Pereira Scared?
In a recent video that is making rounds in the reddit community, Pereira was expressing emotions that he felt during his fight with Sean Strickland. For the first time, we see a fighter go candid and talk about his thoughts and feelings.
He was saying, “OK, I will talk about the last fight. They booked the fight. The guy with 25 fights. Ranked number 4 in the organization. Dangerous. Experienced. It scared me, you know? At the moment of his entrance, when he stepped in the octagon, he looked at me in a way that he never did before. At the moment, I went into fear mode.”
Moreover, this statement about Poatan has left fans and colleagues discussing the more human side of the fighting. And how fighters go through actual bouts of fear and anxiety before fights.
This is something that anyone rarely discusses since fans typically perceive these fighters as individuals who are there to kill and cause mayhem.
