Davis Cup just revised its rules, and this did not sit well with German tennis player Alexander Zverev. Even though the International Tennis Federation Chief David Haggerty Supports the new set of rules, they do not sit well with a lot of other players, and Zverev is one of them.
The primary reason is unknown, but it is assumed that changes in the rule interfere with whatever the tournament stands for. This line of argument seems remarkably similar to what the Australian Team’s captain, Lleyton Hewitt, is saying.
Fallen But Still Standing In Solidarity
2023 has not been the kindest to the German tennis player Alexander Zverev. Due to a severe ankle injury in the Roland Garros, he has to officially sit out the Davis Cup Tournament. Still, that did not stop him from joining his tennis brethren in an attempt to stop these new and unprecedented changes.
Zverev recently took to instagram in order to state his case against the new set of rules. Zverev shared a story that contained Lleyton Hewitt’s comments about the new set of rules and regulations. Zverev wrote, “When is the sport of tennis and the federations of our sport finally going to listen to us players and even more importantly to the living legends of our sport who used to give their absolute everything for the Davis Cup and what it used to stand for.” The new set of rules will make some significant changes to the surface that is played upon.
The primary concern for everyone involved is that the new set of rules will change how the Cup will mediate or see the home-and-away ties. Lleyton Hewitt criticized these sets of rules as well and wrote,
“THEIR HANDS ARE TIED. THERE’S NO HOME-AND-AWAY AND THERE’S NO FIVE SETS, SO IT’S NOT IDEAL. WE ARE PLAYING ON A SURFACE THAT, YEAH, I’M REALLY SICK OF PLAYING ON, TO BE HONEST. THAT’S NOT WHAT DAVIS CUP IS ABOUT. IT’S PLAYING ON CLAY, GRASS, OUTDOOR ELEMNTS.”
Therefore, players are truly concerned about how such a drastic shift can affect the game in general. Keep following our page for more sports-related content and stories.
