Soccer fans will widely agree that regardless of the stakes, an Argentina vs Brazil matchup will always be one of the most watched events. In a recent matchup between Brazil and Argentina, the latter demonstrated a masterclass performance with a 1-0 win. Fans are calling it poetic revenge for the police brutality perpetrated by Brazilian police on Argentine fans.
The Poetic Justice
Argentina handed Brazil its first defeat at the home ground of the World Cup qualifiers. However, the bigger headline was the case of police brutality perpetrated by the Brazilian police on the Argentine fans. This case of brutality happened just before the big match-up. Things escalated to such an extent that the Argentine Football team returned to the dressing room in protest of the police brutality.
Eventually, the situation cooled down, and the match went underway as planned. However, this did not stop Argentinian players from airing their opinions about police brutality. According to Rodrigo De Paul, ‘We are the best national team in the world. We speak on the field, we have the big balls. I showed today once again that I’m leaving everything for this shirt. We made history.” This shows how important national identity is for the Argentinian team. Yet, the team did not lose sight of the job at hand and managed to remain focused and triumphed over the Brazilian front.
Not only Rodrigo but Leo Messi also sent out a strongly worded message against the police brutality of the Argentine fans. However, Brazilian officials are yet to release any official statement regarding the case. Given the worldwide outrage, the officials need to take a stance and release a statement.
