Sania Mirza, India’s first women’s tennis superstar, on Wednesday announced her retirement plans after a first-round exit in women’s double at the Australian Open.
“I’ve decided that this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week. Not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,” she told reporters.

Sania started playing tennis as a teenager during the summer holidays. At the 2002 Asian Games, she picked up her first senior title aged 15. After she began winning adult tournaments, she took tennis very seriously. She turned her passion into a profession and inspired many.
Moreover, she received extensive attention for her life outside tennis. She married Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik and now has a three-year-old son.
She is known as the most popular sportswoman in India with 25m followers combined on her Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
