Lionel Messi of Argentina won the Ballon d’Or award for the greatest player in the world for the seventh time on Monday. He defeated Jorginho and Lewandowski to win the most coveted prize of football. After winning Copa America for the first time with his country in July, the striker added to his 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019 trophies.
Messi Maintains His Ballon D’or Strike Record
Messi joined PSG on a free transfer from Barcelona after ending the previous season as La Liga’s top scorer. He scored 613 points in that match. However, Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski, who was voted best striker on Monday, scored 580 points.
On the contrary, Jorginho won the European Championship with Italy and the Champions League with Chelsea. These victories helped him rank third in this list with 460 points. He stays ahead of Karim Benzema of France and Ngolo Kante of Niger.

Despite finishing third in La Liga and falling in the first round of the Champions League, Messi was the top pick to win this prestigious trophy after winning the Copa America Title with Argentina this year. It was his first significant international trophy. Although it was not an impressive season for Messi at the club level, Barcelona still ranked third in La Liga after losing the first round of the Champions League.
On the other hand, Messi scored two goals in Barca’s Copa del Rey final victory. Thus, he was once again La Liga’s top goalscorer before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
To win the award, Messi beat off Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, and Chelsea’s Jorginho. With this Ballon D’or, he moved two points clear of five-time champion Cristiano Ronaldo, who was among the 30 players selected but did not make the top three rankings for the first time in 11 years.
Closing Thoughts
The Ballon d’Or is decided by a vote of 180 journalists from all around the globe. Since winning the Ballon d’Or four years in a row between 2009 and 2012, Messi has won the trophy for the first time in consecutive seasons. We hope the 34years old forward can keep up this incredible performance and impresses his fans more in the future.
