Even in 2023, homosexuality is still a ‘forbidden’ concept in sports. People associated with the industry believe that they might be cornered if they come out with their sexuality. Therefore, it is a sad state of affairs.
However, recently, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Kevin Maxwell made a historic announcement. Kevin Maxwell came out as gay, making him the first active male coach to do so.
Although, there have been cases where female coaches and athletes came out as queer. But Kevin is the first male to break the stereotypes and come out clean with his sexuality.
In a heart-to-heart interview with Outsports this Thursday, he expressed himself openly.
He talked about several things regarding his sexuality and his decision to come out publicly. Kevin also talked about his 2-year-old relationship, which he kept hidden from the public eye.
This was a truly candid interview where he opened up a lot about his private life. He also discussed how his colleagues, family, and friends supported him throughout the time leading up to this press release.
Kevin Maxwell Gets Emotional About His Sexuality In An Interview:
Kevin said that it took a long time for him to muster up the courage to come out. Fearing discrimination, he tried shoving it off to the side.
But eventually, Kevin decided to take control of his life and went ahead with his decision to come out in public.
Maxwell also thanked Carl Nassib, who also came out about his homosexuality a few while back. In fact, it was Nassib who helped Kevin set up the interview.
Kevin hopes that this press release will initiate a positive change in the sports community and will make things easier for closeted athletes to come out with more ease without the fear of naysayers.
Still, he is also a realist and knows how society functions; therefore believes that true change will come eventually.
