Awards are the biggest testimonies of your hard work. As a player, an award means recognition of all the blood, sweat, and tears that the player has put into his game. As a result, you will find players keeping their awards and accolades close to them. However, not all players are cut from the same cloth, and one such player is Barry Sanders.
Barry Sanders is one of the biggest names in the NFL community. He is credited for several accolades that he won over the years. However, In a hilarious backstory revealed by former teammate Kevin Glover, it was revealed that he was often ditzy with those awards, even leaving them with friends.
Sanders was an exceptional player who was more focused on winning matches for his team than on individual achievements. In fact, his former teammate claimed that Sanders would be absolutely nonchalant about personal achievements. He was the biggest team player of his own time.
Bye Bye Barry
In a recent documentary called Bye Bye Barry, a former teammate revealed something funny and iconic. According to Glover, Barry would repeatedly leave his trophies in Glover’s apartment, saying, “He said, oh take it home (MVP award). I take it home and Barry, William White, and Bennie Blades would come over to my house and my wife would cook for them. Lomas Brown’s wife would cook on different days for em’. And he left his MVP trophy in my apartment the entire year.”
This shows that Barry valued team achievements more than individual accolades. This is the true show of a dedicated player. Sadly, a management scuffle between him and his beloved Detroit Lions led him to an early retirement. At the time of his retirement, Sanders was apparently in his prime. He did not want to play for any other team and therefore chose to walk away.
