With a seminal fight coming up in the form of UFC 294 on the October 21st.
Ahead of the fight, podcaster Joe Rogan sat with Sean O’Malley and his coach, Tim Welch. The trio talked a lot about UFC and other related issues. However, eventually veered off to the topic of Charles ‘do Bronx’ Oliviera.
October 21st is not only the famed fight night between Oliviera and Sean O’Malley, but it also marks the one-year anniversary since Oliviera lost his title to Islam Makhachev. But now, after a year, ‘do Bronx’ is out for blood again.
Was Weight The Problem All Along?
Unlike many fighters, Oliviera had a slow start to the UFC. Oliviera started off as a featherweight fighter and was not consistent with his winning stats.
But as soon as ‘do Bronx’ decided to change his weight class, things got a little more interesting. Oliviera started picking up great wins against established fighters and had a meteoric rise.
Several business insiders noted this change and the aftermath, and one of them was Joe Rogan himself. Rogan said, “He was just too dehydrated and fu*ked up at 45 and for whatever reason just didn’t have it together mentally… And then boom, all of a sudden he’s the fu*king man.”
This might be an oversimplification on Rogan’s part, but changing his weight class did produce good and productive results for the fighter. In fact, this is not only true for Oliviera, many fighters did so and got better results.
So, this might not surprise anybody who has followed UFC for a while now. But Rogan also acknowledges that the fighter did work on his mental prowess as well and changed for the better.
